Write a 250 word ARTIST STATEMENT. The artist statement should include which artist you selected for your remix and what that artists work meant to you, what meaning or interpretation you got from looking at, reading about or hearing about this artist's work, and the impact it had on you. The artist statement should include the artworks selected for the remix and why you decided to do the remix (how does it get your meaning across) in this particular way, "I chose to do this remix because...." - something to that effect. Please avoid lists and step by step instructions on how you did the remix, for example "first I took a picture, then I cut it out, then I...."
The artist that I selected is Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol began as a commercial illustrator, and a very successful one, doing jobs like shoe ads for I. Miller in a stylish blotty line that derived from Ben Shahn. He first exhibited in an art gallery in 1962, when the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles showed his 32 Campbell's Soup Cans, 1961-62. From then on, most of Warhol's best work was done over a span of about six years, finishing in 1968, when he was shot. Andy Warhol means a lot too many people, but to me he is a “Man Behind a Mask.” Basically I feel that he has a hidden agenda. Not taking any credit from his amazing art work, he hardly ever talked and allowed others to address the media, which asked him basic questions. The interpretation I first got was that he was outspoken in mind and creativeness, unashamed of his work, among one of the greatest artist. The impact it had on me is that it inspired me. I always thought of myself as a good artist. I’m not a trained artist or may not know all the art terms, but I know a thing or two about drawing and creativity. Andy Warhol, though he didn’t talk much, expressed his feelings to the world through his art works. The title of my remix is “The Man Behind The Mask.” I chose this title to depict the attitude of Andy Warhol. The artworks that are on the mask are just random arts that he created, but shows what he hid behind. Though he didn’t speak much, the little words that he did speak were so inspiring. At every moment he spoke you wanted to listen because his expressions through words were rare. One Important and inspiring quote that he made was “An artist is someone who produces things that people don't need to have but that he - for some reason - thinks it would be a good idea to give them.” This is a very powerful explanation to the audience of any artist. Basically he believes that an artist creates for himself then the people. He first inspires himself, then his audience. Another unique quote made by Andy Warhol was “My idea of a good picture is one that's in focus and of a famous person.” This is also a connection to his other quote “In the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.” He feels that the best paintings/pictures are those of famous people. He then states that every person is famous for 15 minutes. He used variety, originality, and the theme “Looking Outward: Here and Now.” The reason why I chose to do this remix was to learn more about “The Man Behind The Mask”, Andy Warhol! I wanted to know about his background, what inspired him. I wanted every detail of his work. People have their opinion of Andy Warhol, I just wanted my own, first hand. I found who Andy Warhol was, his purpose, his creativity, his thrive and inspiration. I found that “The Man Behind The Mask” is a simple artist who wants to get his point across to the world, to entertain, and to inspire the people of how you can take one person, one ordinary person and make them famous. Well at least for 15 minutes!
